A storyline decision that needs to be made

Post by Kaz » Fri Aug 05, 2011 3:21 am

Currently the three Gods are mortals.

For roleplay and miniatures a desicion needs to be reached.
Angelique, the self-proclaimed Queen of Islan, rules her land with a steady grip. The rule of law permeated every aspect of her method. On occasion, the rumours would speak of harsh responses, oppression and deft cruelty. But with those rumours also came the ringing endorsements of those who believed in the compassion of blind justice.

Raised in an older House of the Empire, a quiet dignity hangs on the shoulders of young Barnabas. Each action taken, each stance held with forethought and a preponderance of the effects on all his subjects. Only a few close advisors have his ear, and with this come opinions of arrogance, untested wisdom, and the impression of being manipulated. On the battlefield however, this grace and steady deliberation is revered, by enemies and soldiers alike.

Leto, the smartest of three, rose to fame in circles not mentioned in polite conversation. An ear to the ground, a man of the people, his following has grown with a deep personal commitment to those around him. The name Leto has a dual edged meaning to many, wild, chaotic, and unpredictable while at the same time conjuring images of a generous, charismatic leader with a penchant for caring for the poor.
There are 9 playable races in Monarchy

Human, Elven, Goblin, Droben, Vampire, Elemental, Centaur, Sidhe, Dwarven

as well as a selection of sub-races in some cases.

Obviously, racial discrimination is not a part of the Tonan world.

What race are the Mortal incarnations of Angelique, Barnabas and Leto???

discuss ;)

huh?

not sure what question you're answering shred lol

let me re-phrase it as 3 seperate questions.

The ruler of Islan, the mortal reincarnation of Angelique. Is she a human, elf, goblin, droben, vampire, elemental, centaur, sidhe or dwarf?

The young nobel of the empire, the mortal reincarnation of Barnabas. Is he a human, elf, goblin, droben, vampire, elemental, centaur, sidhe or dwarf?

The underground figure, mortal reincarnation of Leto. Is he a human, elf, goblin, droben, vampire, elemental, centaur, sidhe or dwarf?

Based on typical stereotypes of the races from outside literature, I'd wager that

Angelique would be elven. The elves throughout literature are said to be generally close minded and set in their ways. Most elves are seen as good to a fault, and perhaps not seeing the meaning of laws behind the ever present "letter of the law". I would see Angelique as an elven priestess type ruling a state controlled by the church, much like the Catholic Church ruled most of Europe during the dark ages.

Barny, I see as a human. Compared to most other races, humans are considered to have fairly short lifespans, and the other races often attribute humans as having less time to gain the wisdom other races gain inherently through long lives. The only races to usually form empires in most story lines are humans and dwarves, though most literature always puts dwarves in a decline from low population growth, their empires usually are just remnants of history and monuments of days long gone. Humans, however, are quick to learn and theirs souls burn brightly in battle. In this persona, I see him as a warrior/knight type. (note: It's only for the Imperial background I go this way. If the background was simpler--from a village or tribal setting, I'd probably lean more toward Goblin/Orc Chieftain type.)

Leto, I see as a sidhe. Being exceptionally intelligent usually has side effect of having some magical ability (and the sidhe are best at that!). Faerie-folk are also seen as mischievous and can be very wild and unpredictable, while at the same time, taking the utmost care of those around them they "love". I could see Elemental in him, as well, but stories tend to indicate only air elementals were ever whimsical and chaotic. I see him as the Rogue with some sorcerer in him.

You need to take their context into consideration.

Islan, the Empire and the underworld are key to the description of the world post Gods.

They are mortals, so I guess we ought to stick with Human, Elven, Goblin Centaur and Dwarven. Droben dont seem to fit any of the descriptions, vampire is more a curse rather than a race, and the troops that make up Sidhe and Elemental are not really definable in any context of a 'mortal' incarnation.

In my opinion (which is by no means final) Angelique as an Elf doesn't make as much sense as other race options.

"rules her land with a steady grip", "The rule of law permeated every aspect of her method", "rumours would speak of harsh responses, oppression and deft cruelty", "compassion of blind justice."

dont really sound like they are describing an elf

kaz i would have to say that depends on how you look at the elf race.
In some games ive played they are a harsh people to any one outside thier race.
in almost ever game or books ive read they hate change and struggle to keep to the old ways.

I say go back to the three races that started tis. human, elf and goblin. which one for which god im not sure of.

Myself as i play my kingdoms i consider them under the comand of 4saken whom is a lich.

Angelique definitely sounds like an elf, or more likely, a drow.

My opinions, and really little backing to them, is that Angie is a Elven or Dwarf. Dwarf because she has an iron fist, and Dwarves just seem like solid leaders.

Barnabas to me seems like a Vampire, quiet and hiding, until it's time to kill.

And Leto seems like a Sidhe. I always considered them the smartest, and sneakiest of the races.

While it's been a while since I've read them, I recall the elves of Lothlorien from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings were so strict in the laws of their homeland that they threatened death on Gimli the Dwarf until he was vouched for, simply for entering their borders. Similarly, in the Dragonlance Chronicles of my youth, the elves of both Silvanesti and Qualinesti threatened death on any who broke their laws, even simple mundane ones if they were outsiders.

Besides, I've always considered Angelique an ultra conservative to a fault. Elves are almost always too conservative until brought to the brink of annihilation.

And just my two-cents--back to the original game concept, I'd be willing to wager that Angelique knocked off Oleander. She's got right-wing nut case all over her profile, willing to kill anyone to get her point across.

I always felt Leto was too busy having fun to care and Barnabas too dutiful to consider so an act.

Nether makes a good point with all of them being human.

Humans can easily embody all the traits listed above in the guidelines. While the original races may amplify some of the characteristics and flaws of the three, you could easily get away with making them all human.

brought over from the facebook chat

Key - White = Kaz Olive = Nether

Today

Kaz the answer is human

fo rall 3?

why not
i would have said barnabas human angie elven and leto sidhe but you kinda ruled that out already

i havnt ruled out anything.. just made a comment... although sidhe doesnt really work from amortal point of view

true
but they can die

I think general concensus thus far is angie as an elf/drow and barny as a human

they just need some help
doh drow
thats what i was thinking
not sidhe
leto as a drow
kind poetic really
angie an elf leto a drow

so 2x elves and a human
drow is an elf from a 9 races point of view

shrugs
i think it fits him
but i've been out of the world for awhile

nobody has really roeplayed them as mortals
nobody has ever really thought of them as anything other then gods

yeah

doing god miniatures will be fun... but the mortals are an issue lol

well back in the day i always felt that angie and leto would be more antagonistic against one another, and if my memory is correct don't drow elves despise normal elves?

i dont think racial discord is a major part of tonan though. it's pretty equal opportunity, as long as you're not a heathen. The Empire and Istan must be mixed race places

true

even in guilded games, it was rare to see single race guilds. Droben excluded for obvious storyline reasons
most people do roleplay human or elven though

i never roleplayed as the race i picked in game
don't think its realistic to look at what race people played ingame and then relate it to the rp
i know many who RPed as demons but played as human elven ets

or some of us rp messed up chars that are none of the above mentioned

thats just tonan's racial tolerance lol

haha

goblins are prepared to follow a human, humans a centaur, vampires a droben leader etc

just thought maybe the racial prejudice that some races historically battle with might add an edge to the rivalry between the three
not necessarily be the driving force but a nice little factor

i suppose, although, they dont really need another reason to battle each other.. other than combining to take down the new gods, they are pretty good at fighting each other lol

ah come on man new angles = fun
but you're right those came come from other sources they don't need to be built in

true... you should post this in the thread... this chat isn't going to remain long

How does something along these lines sound??

-------------

In the aftermath of the fall of the gods Foret, Isonia and Darden. The races of Tonan started to collect together in racial groups. The mixed society starting to crumble without faith war to keep them together and mask their differences. In an attempt to prevent a total return to segregation, monarchs from the Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Centaur and Goblin races created the Empire. Governed by the alliance of the 5 royal families, and a council consisting of Elders from all races of Tonan, the Empire spanned the majority of the known world. Every few years, the title of Emperor would change in rotation between the monarchs of the quintet.

Islan and the Free Cities, are regions that have broken away from Empire control.

Islan, a huge region that broke away when Angelique came of age. Born from an old family, long removed from the elven throne, but with a much older claim. She conviced many other families with similar history of loss of claim to the throne of their race, to break from the Empire, with promises of greater influnce, and a more lawful society with a solid continuous rule.

The Free Cities are bastions within the borders of the Empire. A collection of cities that have succeeded for a wide variety of reasons. Once, easily brought back into the Empire, Leto - a half-blood bastard born of the union of a elven ranger captain and a Human princess promissed to another, and banished from the Empire - has helped unify the scattered cities, and organise resistance from being reabsorbed into the Empire.

Barnabas - having been made mortal before - fought the hardest against the flood of Dardens bowl, and was last to be reborn. He is a young noble from the Human bloodline, several steps away from succession, but has a greater influence on the armies than his position would suggest, and the hearts of the people.

Mav,

You are more than welcome to take what I've written and put your own twist to it.

As is everyone else.

We ended up with a decent connecting over story when we put our heads together last time.

It's a lot harder to not tread on roleplay toes now though, with so few people about.

I do like the premise of the story, though I have a few concerns. With the storyline proposed, there is no real reason to support any of them. It seems its divulging from the faith concept to more as to what kind of society do you prefer.

Islan, with a lawful society and solid continuous role, seems to be more inclined to attract merchants and those that prefer to avoid uncertainty.

The Free Cities more resembles the attitude of children that didn't being told what to do by their parents (in this case, the Empire) and have banded together to keep them out of their lives. Except for when they need a loan or a favor, of course :P

Then there's the Empire which seems more like an ancient version of the USA. There is an Emperor, but also monarchs of the represented races.

My suggestion(s) are as follows:

We know that the old deities have returned. Whats to make us follow them after the fiasco of following them before, only to have them overthrown by three new ones, and then for them to return to take back their spots only to end up mortal. (that is if I have pieced together the history properly)

The Empire has started to crumble, whether its just its age showing or just the fact that there's nothing holding them together anymore, so the three reborn deities now have a chance to gain followers and start their climb back to the throne of godhood.

Angelique takes her plans to Islan, an ancient kingdom that has now been delegated to a forgotten frontier of the Empire,. There she began to bring order, pushing back raids and making the highways safe from brigands. Quickly rising in the ranks and gaining many followers that support her iron fist policy on justice, it's whispered that Islan would be better with her in charge then some distant Emperor who they've only seen on their coins.

Upon hearing this, the Empire begins mustering a small army in preparation to fight the rebellion, which is it's first major blunder in this Age. Leading it is the youngest commander in the history of the Empire, Barnabas, a young noble from a major House, and he's given the Emperor's leave to stop it from spreading anyway he can.

Fearing that her hard work would be undone, Angelique gathers volunteers and has them begin training as cohesive military units to prepare for the imminent attack. Her army, though ill-trained, quickly dwarfs the army her informers say is marching against her.

The two armies meet on the plains that once separated Islan from the Empire, their ancient borders, and there they clash swords. Where once, hundreds of years ago, Islan fought for her freedom against the expanding Empire, now she fought again.

Unfortunately, even with Angelique's numbers or Barnabas' trained soldiers, the battle raged on for two days with neither gaining any advantage. On the third day, with the ground wet from the blood of the killed, a half-elf rides into each of the two camps and arranges for a meeting.

The half-elf had watched the battle and in-fact was behind it. It was his whispers to the people of Islan that they should be free once again and it was his reports to the Empire that warned them of it. His own force was too small for what he needed to do, a ragtag army of bandits and mercenaries.

Leto, the half-elf, had been banished from the Empire. It was only partially his fault that he had been. When the Bowl of Darden was smashed, instead of trying to use his powers to fight it, this once mighty God used it to throw further chaos into the world. How was he supposed to know what was to happen?

A human princess, who just had happened to be rescued from brigands, fell in love with her savior, an elven ranger captain. Both, caught up in the chaos of what had just happened, fell into each others arms and forsook both of their arranged marriages that lay before them. With this union, Leto's new vessel would be forged.

When Angelique and Barnabas arrived to the meeting, Leto proposed a compromise.

Islan would be free again, but also because she would no longer be of the Empire, there would now be taxes on selected trade between the two. Barnabas felt this was too unfair until he was told he could decide what would be taxed. This would keep Islan from growing too powerful and in-turn allow Barnabas' House to grow in prosperity, by taxing items that would be exported by his family's competitors.

Both turned to Leto and asked what he got out the deal. It is then that the Free Cities were born, a buffer between the the Empire and Islan, part of which had belonged to ancient Islan and which was now controlled by the Empire.

After much discussion and debate, Barnabas put his stamp on a treaty, Angelique signed it, and Leto put his mark on it.

All had won out with the treaty, though some had a harder time explaining it.

Angelique got her kingdom, Barnabas stopped the rebellion from spreading and in-turn secured more power for his House (and the Emperor, once Barnabas advised him of the amount of money the taxes would earn the Empire), and Leto gained the Free-Cities.

People began to flock to all three of them, asking for their help, their guidance, and in return gave them what they desired most, their prayers. They each believed that the prayers would help them achieve immortality again to claim the throne of heaven.

But it wouldn't be all.
