The Icharii

Post by The_Shapeshifter » Sun Aug 25, 2013 2:11 pm

Kaz asked me to open a Thread to discuss the Icharii as a race. To my knowledge there have been other winged races played in the past, the Icharii really have only been played by me. Regardless of that, I would like some insight on to how they can be implemented. Currently, this is only a placeholder until I can write a full bio on the race based on some old roleplay. I believe that there are only a few people still around that I have played Silverwolfe or other Icharii with, and off the top of my head, those are Toph, Nagash, seska and lyssia. Below, I have quoted text from messages with Kaz.

Hey, wasn't sure which account to post to, as this one seem to end with death. I thought it would be good to discuss shapeshifters.

At the moment, we've got two types of shapeshifter. The wraith, which is a lone being from the void (and there are currently no others of it's type... yet) and there are also the Kitsunes which are the thievery troop for the Centaur. Kitsunes are traditionally (japanese myth-wise) men who shift into foxes, but I decided to expand and they are you basic beast shifters.

I was wondering if you wanted to flesh out how the Icharii fit in.
The_Shapeshifter wrote:That would be great. Im back for the haul and am trying to ressurect Silverwolf. The Icharii in themselves are not natural shapeshifters. Silverwolfe gained that ability through his father, and the ability to shapeshift is a providence of the most powerful Icharii lords.. What the Icharii are, as described in threads back in the days of canon in Maxim are pretty much mana thieves that were mutated by the magic they stole over the years. It made them like the sidhe, immortal, but it took several generations to take effect. They also became creatures of magic and a select few icharii have learned to harness that power through runes, and are able to inscribe with simple gestures in the air. The vast majority of the race however are simply winged warriors, using speed and unique weapons to avail them in battle. In previous roleplay with toph, seska and others, the Icharii were conquerors in the ancient past, and were only stopped by a coalition of elves, sidhe and a young human race. The majority were slaughtered in that war, with only very few surviving into posterity. Silverwolfe, or Juriel was a demon hunter, and had been to the underworld, once in death, (an unfortunately lost roleplay) and othertimes hunting a demon of particular interest. Ill see what I can scrounge up, and once I hop on my computer I can give you a synopsis of his history. (As im typing this from my phone) I have plans for some Icharii to remain, but once I revive Silverwolfe from his stasis (Pandemonium is a blade comprised of a meteoric metal and infused with the souls of his two earliest confidants) l plan on him being a much darker character than in the past. Please respond with any insight, advice or suggestions. I would love to flesh out the icharii with you, as theyve existed is Tismad roleplay since 2001, and it would be interesting to see them actually "canonized" as it were. Oh... one last thing, there are still icharii, hiding deep within the mountains of the realm as in recent years they have become hunted by other magical beings, to be discussed later as well.
Kaz wrote:You should start a thread specifically about them in the behind the scenes forum. As it currently stands I'm in the process of sorting out the in-game races but there is still room to tweak them. Once I've finished getting the artwork done then they would have to be a race that gets added in their own right. Any existing population out to really be located on Mo-Pri I'd guess. It is after all the one place that nobody's been for a while (until recently).

When you start a thread, feel free to quote what you've written to me in PM, and what I'm writing now.

If we're going to build the Icharii into the existing races I'm not sure where would be best for them. Maybe getting their own race might be best, only problem is that ends up costing me a load more money in art-work.

As it currently stands, Sidhe have been switched from Faeries etc to essentially an Elemental of innate magic that look a little like the elves. The old Sidhe subspecies, Fearies Banshees etc are now Fae. Sidhe, Elemental, Droben and Fae are all essentially connected by all being 'elemental' according to standard definitions.

All elemental troops are now fire elementals, droben are basically earth elementals, sidhe are magic elementals and fae are the wind and water elementals.

In addition we've got the Humans, Elves, Dwarves, the alliance of part-beast species that we've grouped under Centaur, the alliance of species under Goblin and Vampires.

I don't know where Icharri fit in.

One alternative would be to split the Fae into wind/air elementals and water elementals. At the moment they are made up mostly of water elementals, and your race could sit in among a selection of wind/air elementals.

If toph is still around, maybe he can give me some thought on this, but so far this is what i came up with as a description.

The Average Icharii male stands at just about 219 cm. Their hair ranges from blonde to light brown, with eyes that range from the lightest blue to an almost red. Almost all are heavily muscled both from flight and combat training. They are more human like, many not having the fair skin of the elves, with much of it weathered and browned from the wind and the sun over the ages, and also having rounded ears. The wings themselves are of note, as it is what denotes what magical ability an Icharii possesses. Most Icharii have brown to golden hued wings, feathered and silky soft. The mages themselves are born inherently mages, and have wings of the purest white. The most powerful of the Icharii are not pure-bloods, but a mixture. Silverwolfe himself is a Icharii-Sidhe Mix, based on his fathers unwanted advances on a sidhe Mage and has wings of a silvery Hue, as did his children. I have not made any other racial mixes to date, but as I had it envisioned, the Icharii can interbreed with most humanoids (elves, humans, sidhe....).

Thats all I have time to write currently. Will edit later.

I've tweaked the troop types over the last few years in an effort to try and create a more logical structure to them.

- Centaur troops are now all mythological hybrid creature (part man, part beast)
- Elemental troops are now all fire based mythological creatures
- Sidhe troops we changed over the course of another thread to suit the roleplayed idea of sidhe (as opposed to the troop types)

After renaming Sidhe, I created Fae as a sort of placeholder for a few troops that had been unceremoniously dumped out of the troop list.

If we were to officially canonise the Icharii and add them as a racial troop type, the most logical thing to do would be to create a selection of mythological creatures that can fly, and place Icharii among them.

Doing that would mean that it would make more sense to change Fae again, and make them more water-based giving us a racial group for each type of elemental (fire, air, rock, water, elan).

Fae do currently include 2/5 water associated elementals (Banshees and Undines), they also include Sylphs which are air elementals, and Faeries are air spirits.

It would work out reasonably well, for the most part water elementals tend to be females who lure men to the sea, nyphs, sirens, mermaids etc. We could continue to call them Fae

Looking through wikipedia at legendary flying creatures, there are quite a few that are similar to your Icharii. Therefore it could make sense to use Icharii more as the Race name that as a sub troop.

The main question would be that which would be the best sub-species options.

The Sylph would be a great stealth unit as the term faery deals with too broad of a spectrum of creatures. Garuda and karura pretty much the same creature, as are Harpies and Kinnara. Tengu would be awesome, as would Angels.... but Im not sure. I need more input, as this is all of our game, and Kaz, you have the final say.

Garuda / Karura / Tengu are all pretty much the same thing : Body of a man, head of a bird, withs of a bird. Sometime depicted with head of a man instead of a bird.

Kinnara differ from Harpies though, they sound more like your Icharii. Kinnara are the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a swan, sort of minotaur-ish.

Harpies are more like complete birds with a human head (and sometimes breasts). They unlike the Kinnara don't generally get depicted with arms. Harpies are more like Alkonost or Sirin or Gamayun or Kalavinka

We can use the names of these mythological creatures and change things about. We can also use different birds as the basis for the bird section. For example a swan, hummingbird, crow, vulture and golden eagle are all very different birds.

Useful resources
http://www.environment.gov.au/biodivers ... light.html
http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/ornitholsyl.htm specifically (http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/554notes1.html)

An example might be

T1: Kinnara Icharii - Lower body of a swan, upper body and head of a humanoid, wings of a swan (rapid take-off)
T2: Karura Icharii - Full body of a humanoid, head of an albatross, wings of an albatross (gliding)
T3: Garuda Icharii - Full body of a humanoid, head of a humanoid, wings of a swallow (speed)
T4: Tengu Icharii - Full body of a humanoid, head of an eagle, wings of an eagle (soaring)
T5: Harpy Icharii - Body of an over-sized robin, upper-chest and head of a humanoid, wings of a robin (quick manoeuvres)

What's more important is the general idea behind the Icharii, which only you and the people that have roleplayed the race can decide. In the end, it might be my call in what racial troop names we use, but in canonising a player-created race, then it's not down to me to change the idea of the race itself.

Having the body and head of a humanoid with just the wings of a bird, already diverts from standard mythological creatures except for angels (I'd rather not use angels as a species/troop type). If Icharii had body of a humanoid, head of a bird (with the ability to shape-shift the head) then you could literally just differentiate by bird type, which would be simpler, but I don't know how well that would agree with the roleplay of the race itself. Another alternative would be a humanoid/avian shapeshifter who can shift between humanoid and avian form, or chose to be somewhere between the two.

I'll help expand with ideas, but in the end I'd rather see an Icharii race come out of the people that roleplayed one, not just enforce one.

Whenever I have played the race, It was more like icharus, or an angel. If you look at the avatar on The Shapeshifter, thats pretty much how I've always envisioned them. Humanoid with large wings on their backs, like sinister angels. I also had them as quite a bit taller than most. In past roleplays, The Icharii lord always either had a slave army made up of other species or loyal serfs. In D&D terms, Think Lawfully aligned, good, neutral or evil. The only actual Icharii that served in combat was the mage class and the elite Cyllvistha. (Seal-vese-tha) Imagine Praetorian Guard, in full mythril plate.... that flies. Silverwolfe (or Juriel) had enslaved goblins and trolls in some roleplay depicting ancient times and more recently he ruled as lord of a Human/Elf hybrid kingom, always with his elite guard. So, that could be one way we implement the Icharii, as a rare race that rules over those they see as lower beings. Would be a good way to implement the air and wind elementals imho. Whqt do you think?

Whoa. Silverwolfe! Hi! Great to see you :)

The description of the Icharii sounds similar to how I had envisioned them, although my mental picture had a little more animal/bat thrown into the picture (more than average body hair, large and pointy/frilled ears.). This starts to make them seem almost vampiric, though, which is probably something we want to avoid. The height is definitely right, though. I remember we described them as easily a foot or more taller than Toph, who is roughly 6 feet tall.

In terms of troop names, I agree with Kaz that avoiding Angels is a good idea, but... I don't yet have opinions on what a good concept would be. I'll try and think of something over the next few days.

I'm probably just going to leave the Fae as they are, maybe tweak them a little to remove the sylphs just in case. Simply because I want to get the artwork done, and Fae are one of the races that were up next.

That's not to say I wont introduce the Icharii as a race, but they need to be more developed in a way that we can get 5 troop types out of them. Ruling over lower beings is good to work with from a roleplay perspective, but a little restrictive in terms of use in-game, I'd rather that each race (if added) can stand on it's own so to speak without needing to fall back on using pre-existing races for enslaved troop types.

If we're going to re-introduce them as a full race suddenly, chances are they've been living and breeding over on Mo-Pri, away from the other races for the most part.
